TORONTO – Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Rogers Cup title in a swift victory against Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2. It was a chaotic week in Toronto as many matches were postponed due to heavy rain, but the Serbian native stuck in there and won his third title.
The crowd sensed Gasquet’s frustration in the match and tried their best to cheer him long for a longer show. But to no avail, he just could not win a game against No. 2 in the world.
This years Rogers Cup was in a bit of a fray due to the media’s heavy attention on the Olympic Games in London. Big names such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all withdrew, while players like Tsonga were eliminated early on. Surprisingly enough, Andy Murray showed up just a few days after winning a gold medal in London against Federer.
Also in the crowd for this championship match, Prime MInister Stephen Harper made a surprise appearance to witness the largest tennis tournament in Canada.
After tossing some armbands and tennis rackets into the lively audience, the games ended off with flying streamers and fireworks to celebrate in Djokovic’s big win.
