Tupperware Remix Party at Horseshoe Tavern

Think about Blade Runner, okay? No, better yet, think about Star Wars. Think about that scene in the Mos Eisley cantina where that weird alien band is playing in the corner. Now, reimagine that scene; throw in some Tron references, some gunmetal, some chrome, and then a top it off with a ton of 1980’s tropes. And the band themselves? They’re like superheroes. The frontman’s got this Iron Man, Judge Dredd sort of a vibe, the bass player has a lion’s face and he’s as funky as any member of Parliament, their drummer looks like the skeleton of a Storm Trooper, and on guitars, imagine gladiators from the future.

Now you’re seeing Tupper Ware Remix Party just like I was seeing them on Friday night at Toronto’s very own Mos Eisley cantina, The Horseshoe Tavern.

Tupper Ware Remix Party released their new EP ‘Tonight’ that night – trust me, they went over that little piece of wordplay nearly a dozen times before moving on – and they played through it like they were trying to beat the Millennium Falcon’s Kessel Run record. They were full of energy from start to finish; the Robocop/Iron-Man/Judge Dredd mix of a frontman – whose vocals were affected, which really added to the robotic, electronic feel of the whole show – threw up some 1980’s aerobics workout-inspired dance moves mid-set, and even crowd-surfed. He reminded me of the Rocketeer then, actually, which is always a cool thing to be reminded of.

It isn’t all theatrics and fun, though. Tupper Ware Remix Party is a group brimming with musicianship. They play a kind of funky, electronic, 80’s dance rock, but they do it really very well. Their lion-faced bass player is superb, they’ve got a very, very good drummer, and the guitar player shreds like he belongs in Iron Maiden. They’re super good at what they do, both theatrically and musically, and it’s clear that, despite being aliens, they’re all total pros.

Tupper Ware Remix Party is definitely a band to catch the next time around. The show is a blast and the music is fun all the way through. Oh, and they really, really want to go to Japan. They can’t stop thinking about Japan. So, if you’re out there, Japanese booking agent, make that happen.
