Fans gathered at the Hard Luck bar this week on a freezing cold Wednesday night, to celebrate FrnkIero AndThe Cellabration’s very first show in Toronto. At -21 degrees with the wind chill and being a 19+ show, I was honestly surprised to see how many fans began lining up in front of the Hard Luck really early so that they could stake out the best spot.
Frank Iero, himself, is no stranger to the Toronto scene. He has performed at the Air Canada Centre with his former band My Chemical Romance, The Pheonix with his other band Death Spells, and now the time has finally arrived for TO to be graced the presence of his newest project – Frnk Iero AndThe Cellabration.
Seeing FrnkIero AndThe Cellabration was really a unique experience. The crowd seemed to have been divided between fans that knew their music, and spillage from his My Chemical Romance days who were curious to see what he was up to now. Seeing Iero front and center was interesting, because you really got to see his passion for his craft shine through – something that you didn’t really get to see during his My Chemical Romance days, as he was always off to the side of the stage. He was very energetic and engaging with the audience, and the chemistry between him and his band was really something memorable. You could instantly tell that they were having a great time and effortlessly meshed together.
One thing that really stood out was how Iero can keep a show rolling smoothly even with unexpected bumps in the road. Towards the end of their set, the mics stopped working – but not even that can slow down the Cellabration. Iero quickly switched the setlist around to perform their more known track ‘ Weighted’ earlier in the set and turned the Hard Luck into a big sing along. As the night ended, they closed out with their song ‘Joyriding’, and Iero got right into his fans by placing the mic stand on the bar floor so fans could really get in there to sing along, while he jumped into the pit area with them as well.
At the end of the night, he mentioned that he would be selling merch at his merch table so that fans could come up and meet him, if they’d like. It’s amazing to see how down to earth and humble Iero continues to be after all of the fame he’s gained through his previous bands – it’s something that seems to be hard to come by these days.
