St. Vincent at The Danforth Music Hall

St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) made her triumphant return to Toronto last night for the first of two sold-out shows at The Danforth Music Hall. The American artist had a fantastic 2014, reaching a career high in an already impressive body of work with her self-titled record, St. Vincent, topping pretty much everyone’s must-listen-to list and recently earning her a Grammy for Best Alternative Rock Album. 

The first night in Toronto may not have been as large as last year’s memorable NXNE performance – headlining Yonge-Dundas Square to some 20,000 music lovers – but the Danforth show was definitely more intimate and certainly welcomed by her fans. 

Clark – backed by her three-piece band – ended on a big encore, crowd surfing through a sea of outstretched hands and over the heads of people who had lined up as early as 3:00 pm to be in the front row.

As last night’s display proved, there’s a reason why Clark has topped countless lists for best live acts. Regardless of stage size, she brings a massive sound and talent with her – playing the guitar with fingers that probably don’t operate the way normal fingers operate. Luckily Toronto gets to see St. Vincent do it all over again tonight, too.
