It wasn’t how I thought the 2016 Rogers Cup would end, everyone giving hugs at Djokovic’s request after he just won his fourth Rogers Cup. It seemed fitting after another great tournament finished, although, it was short of the biggest names in tennis after three big-names withdrawing just prior to the start of the tournament. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic came into the Rogers Cup as the number one seeded player in the world and will leave number one.The rain held off for most of the week until the final day, causing short delays to the doubles final.
The worlds number one seed Djokovic defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to win his 30th ATP Masters, a record. He said listening to his coach the previous night helped him defeat Nishikori.
During the match, some of Nishikori’s returns really surprised Djokovic, causing the champion some extra effort to get to the ball. For a moment in the 2nd set, it looked as though Djokovic was ailing in his lower back area as Nishikori took over the match. A brief shift in momentum when Nishikori took a 4-3 games lead. In the end, unforced errors played a big role as Nishikori had 28 errors to Djokovic’s 18.
Nishikori and Djokovic will fly to the Rio Olympics representing their countries, something they are both greatly looking forward to.
