2016 Year in Review Staff Picks- Connor Beck

Everyday we will be posting a year end survey submitted by team members, they appear unedited with contributors told to interpret questions how ever they see fit. -Dakota, Music Editor

How long have you been with Live in Limbo and what do you do for the site?

Only 3 months. I do mostly concert reviews and occasionally interviews with musicians.

What were your three favourite albums of 2016?

Bon Iver – 22, A Million

Arkells – Morning Report

Frank Ocean – Blonde

What was the most underrated album of 2016?

Holy Fuck – Congrats

What was your favourite Canadian album of 2016?

Arkells – Morning Report

What were your three favourite songs of 2016?

Frank Ocean – Self-Control (I know, unconventional pick from the album, but the last minute is the heart and soul of that album for me)

Bon Iver – 10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄

Jain – Come (it’s technically older than 2016, but this year I discovered it and it’s amazing)

How many concerts and/or festivals did you go to in 2016?

Oh god… uh… 40ish? No festivals this year though. Thought about going to Live at Pemberton, but the lineup was garbage.

What were your three favourite concerts of the year?

Half Moon Run with Plants and Animals at Massey Hall

The Elwins with The Kents and The Nursery at Adelaide Hall

Dance Yourself Clean at Lee’s Palace (less of a concert and more of a show, but an incredible setlist of everything I needed)

What was your favourite festival you attended of the year?

None, sadly.

What festival had the best lineup (regardless if you attended or not)?

Would have loved loved LOVED to have been in Toronto for Wayhome.

What/who was the biggest musical disappointment (live or album) for you?

Two Door Cinema Club – Gameshow. While not an awful album, it really lost a lot of the momentum that TDCC had garnered with their last two records. It was a real disappointment. Fortunately, their concert this year was still outstanding (probably because they only played maybe 3 or 4 songs from their new record).

In your opinion, what was the biggest music story?

The hype and mystery surrounding Frank Ocean’s new album release. The tension had literally been mounting for years, then he released Endless and people were more confused than sated. Of course, it was all worth it in the end.

What band did you see live for the first time that really impressed you?

Half Moon Run. I honestly didn’t have very high expectations at all. Their music is sort of on the fringe of my bubble of interests, but seeing them live was an incredible experience. They have so much passion and talent that it was an absolutely enrapturing performance.

What was your favourite new musical discovery of 2016?

Jain. I listen to almost no “World” music, and so never would have discovered this up-and-coming French electro-pop singer had it not been for Live and Limbo. Her album is front to back infectious, fun music that I go back to repeatedly.

Who were you disappointed to miss seeing live this year?

Arkells. Their new album was fantastic, but due to unfortunate events I couldn’t see their show. Besides, Massey Hall? For Arkells? I just felt like that was a poor choice of venue for such rowdy fun music. Also, Foals.

Who should we be looking out for in 2017?

LCD Soundsystem’s new record. It’s going to be mind-blowing.

Who’s going to be headlining (or at least playing) all the 2017 festivals?

Hopefully LCD Soundsystem as well. Must… see… live…

What was your favourite review or photo set you did for LiL this year?

The Elwins, for sure. Their show, plus the lineup of openers was the easiest glowing review I’ve ever written. It basically wrote itself.

Is there anything else you want to say about 2016 or predict about 2017?

Honestly, while my concert experience was outstanding, I was a little disappointed in the offering of albums this year. Hopefully 2017 reverses that trend!
