Song Premiere: “Bonfires” by Rainy Day Crush

Rainy Day Crush is gearing up for the release of their upcoming EP, I’m Still Alive,on June 9th and we have an exclusive listen to their brand new single “Bonfires”!

From the artist : “There’s a moment in the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption where the main character, Andy Dufresne, is telling his buddy Red about his plans to escape from prison. He says, “You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? They say it has no memory. And that’s where I want to finish out my life, Red. In a warm place that has no memory.”

When I wrote this song, I was in a relationship that I really enjoyed but knew wasn’t going to last. I remember being overcome by this sense of longing, much the same way Andy longs for the Pacific. It actually woke me up in the middle of the night, so I headed out onto my front porch and started playing the guitar. I used the idea of a legendary place with no memory as a way to start my story, and the song pretty much wrote itself.

This was the first song we recorded for this EP, back when we had no idea it would turn into the first song for this EP, and it kind of set the creative tone for the rest of the recording we did. The studio had this little toy piano that I instantly fell in love with, so I insisted we put it in the song. On top of that, I had messed around with strings and mandolins and different things, but nothing was really working until I somehow decided I wanted to try an accordion. I went out, bought one, learned the song, and it worked. And I’ve always thought of this as an acoustic guitar song, but the electric sounded SO much better.

The ocean sounds you hear in the song are actually Lake Michigan. I have a little Zoom H6 recorder, and I spent a dark winter night recording beach sounds down at the marina where I work.

Everything about the way this song came together just seemed to work out perfectly. We couldn’t be happier! The other songs on the EP are faster and louder, so they soak up more of the attention, but “Bonfires” is special to us. ” – Matt Specht, lead singer of Rainy Day Crush
