German Angelique Kerber’s defeat by American Sloane Stephens was the shock of the day at the Rogers Cup as Stephens won in straight sets 6-2 6-2 in less than an hour.
Stephens won the match and looks like she has fully completed her comeback from a bad foot injury that kept her out for nearly 12-months. At times she simply over powered Kerber on her way to the important win.
The 24-year-old Stephens won her next match, including saving three match points in the third set to beat Czech Lucie Safarova 6-2 1-6 7-5 in their quarter-final.
Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain, had a tough time with Australian Ashleigh Barty 6-0 3-6 6-2. Muguruza’s next match against Elina Svitolina was postponed due to pouring rain and lightning across the Toronto area. Muguruza is leading one-set to none.
Elina Svitolina comfortably defeated American Venus Williams in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to get to her matchup with Muguraza. It was sad to see Venus after the match, it may be the last time she plays in Toronto. She will be 39 and a proud aunt by 2019 and most certainly past the age of serious competition.
