New York Comic Con 2017 Recap

Over the last few years, New York Comic Con has grown exponentially. This year the size and crowd rivaled San Diego Comic Con as the preeminent pop culture convention of the year. Increased commercial presence, including huge instillations by Warner Brothers (Justice League,) Sony (Spider-Man : Homecoming,) Disney/Lucasfilm (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Amazon (The Tick) forced con organizers into implementing a lottery for panels and exclusives. This system, while fair and necessary, limited the scope of what a patron could experience over the course of the four day mega convention. This even included members of the Press!

But while an attendee couldn’t see it all, there were was still more than enough to experience. Renovations to the secondary atrium forced the artist alley into a new hall but the guest list of comic creators remained extensive and impressive. The usual cast of merchants and exhibitors always kept the main floor busy to near capacity. But even while bogged up in the crowd, you could experience one of the main draws of New York Comic Con- the cosplay! As usual there were plenty of impressive displays from Marvel, Star Wars and DC fans. But the real stand outs this year were fans cosplaying characters from Blizzard’s hit game Overwatch.
