World Premiere

Album Premiere: “Roses for Ruins” by Lief Hall

From the Artist:

“Roses for Ruins explores the relationship between the personal and the political, between nature and the body, between fantasy, science fiction and the subconscious. Like my previous EP Transform, Roses for Ruins looks at the complex relations of contemporary life, but this album does so in a way that seeks to engage more fully with the earth and elements, using landscapes and processes in nature as an analogy for contemporary experience.

Releasing this album is very exciting for me because it is the first time I have incorporated acoustic instrumentation in my solo work, which has been a long time dream of mine. For the album I worked with drummer Byron Peters, harpist Elisa Thorn and cellist Martin Reisel. All of them are amazing musicians who come from slightly different musical background than myself, all trained in either jazz, classical or new music, but with a dedicated practice in improvisation and experimental technique. Working with them was such a pleasure and incorporating live instrumentation into my music is something I definitely plan to continue in the future.

The other things that really feels different about this album is the level of production. For the first two releases I just recorded and mixed them from my bedroom in Berlin, but for this album I had the opportunity to record at an amazing studio on Gabriola Island called The Noise Floor with Jordan Koop. Jordan Koop is also an old friend of mine and a musician himself, and he actually ended up playing electric guitar on the album in a moment of inspiration during one of our recording sessions. Recording at this studio felt like another dream come true for me since I was able to get away from busy city life to focus totally on recording.”
