Gaming Best Bets – Late Summer and Fall 2018

While we enjoy this summer heat, we might also be spending time inside beside a fan or air conditioner playing some video games! Here’s a look at your best bets for new games being released at the end of the summer and into the fall.

Donut County

Date: August 28th, 2018

Platform(s): PlayStation 4, PC, iOS

Genre: Indie thing-consuming simulator

Donut County has been in the works for years and is finally seeing release this summer. In this game, you’re a giant yawning pit, and the more you consume (from bricks to cars to skyscrapers), the bigger you get. This is meant to be a silly game and will bring back memories of last decade’s Katamari Damacy. You may notice a copycat game or two with the same mechanics are already out there – but Donut County is the original.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Date: October 5th, 2018

Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Genre: Open-world ancient Greek action adventure RPG

I talked about this game (and a couple others in this list) in my E3 follow-up, and now we know even more about the adventure in ancient Greece. Choose a male or female hero and explore islands (naval warfare!), relationships (branching romance options!) and Assassin’s Creed’s growing lore (cutscenes!) while you also learn or re-learn a thing or two about Greek civilization close to 2500 years ago.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas

Date: October 16th, 2018

Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Genre: Toys-to-life space shooter and also Star Fox

I’ve found a way to reference this game in multiple articles here on LiL and I’m still excited about it. Starlink picks up from Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions as the latest game in the toys-to-life category, but this one focuses on shooting lasers and flying spaceships and fighting aliens. Not to mention the Switch edition has special content from the Star Fox series (including pilots and ships). Don’t want to collect a bunch of plastic toys you have no room to store? Everything sold “in real life” can be purchased and earned in-game too!

Red Dead Redemption 2

Date: October 26th, 2018

Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Genre: Grand Theft Western sequel

A lot has been said about Red Dead Redemption 2, and if you know the first game then you’ll know what to expect: open-world, wild west, saloons, cowboys and a story you can happily ignore while you explore. It’s been 8 years since the first title and in that time developer Rockstar has focused their energy on the online world of Grand Theft Auto V. Expect Red Dead to follow suit, with micro-transactions to join in too.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Date: September 7th, 2018

Platform(s): PlayStation 4

Genre: Silk-wasting action-adventure game

I talked about this game in my last “Gaming Best Bets” article, which went live before the game was pushed back to September. It’s definitely coming out this time, and it’ll be worth the wait!

Honourable Mentions

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (September 14th, 2018, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (September 21st, 2018, PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Super Mario Party (October 5th, 2018, Nintendo Switch)

Battlefield V (October 19th, 2018, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

Stay tuned for “Gaming Best Bets” looking at the very busy November-December release window and beyond!
