After what felt like an extremely long 7 years, Irish rock band , The Script, finally returned to Toronto on their Tales from The Script : Greatest Hits Tour.
This was my first time back at Massey Hall since they did their renovations, and all I have to say is WOW! It’s absolutely gorgeous in there. They put washrooms on every floor, moved around some of the bars to add more seating, and they also have really cool music memorabilia on display all around the venue.
Fans were clearly very excited for this show. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many fans packed into the venue early and by the time opener, Calum Scott, hit the stage it felt like the venue was already packed to the brim. Rising to fame from his appearance on Britian’s Got Talent, he treated fans to some fun covers like his rendition of Maroon 5’s ‘This Love’ and Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’, as well as some of his original songs such as “If You Ever Change Your Mind” and “You Are The Reason”.
When 8:45 rolled around, everyone in Massey Hall was itching with anticipation as the lights began to dim and a roaring cheer echoed throughout the venue. The Script really set the tone for the night when they opened up their set with ‘Superheroes’. Deep cut after deep cut, the energy never died down through the night as fans sang along and danced. At times it felt like the people around me were even singing louder than the band.
One thing I’ve always really appreciated about seeing The Script live is how interactive they are with their fans. Singer, Danny O’Donoghue, and drummer, Glen Power, had no problem jumping right into the crowd to perform a few songs. I’m also really glad to see that they continue to do a really fun segment where they have a fan ring up their ex and O’Donoghue introduces himself to them and dedicates the song ‘Nothing’ to them, before asking the crowd to tell them ‘fuck you!’. O’Donoghue was also seen frequently sitting on the edge of the stage to serenade fans for a little bit. It’s amazing how they can take a bigger venue and make it feel more intimate.
Their 90-minute set absolutely flew by, and as our night with The Script came to a close, they left on a high note as they performed ‘No Good In Goodbye’, ‘Breakeven’, and ‘Hall of Fame’. With the constant high energy throughout the venue the entire night, it was evident that Toronto really missed The Script, and I hope it won’t take as long for them to return next time.
The Script is currently on tour in support of their new Greatest Hits album Tales From The Script, which is available now.
