Behind The Video: “Heartless” – Napoleon

Based in Toronto ON, Alt-Punk/Post-Hardcore four-piece, ​Napoleon,​ has been attracting attention from fans and media alike since their formation in early 2018.

Celebrated as one of ‘23 Canadian bands Silverstein’s Shane Told knows will keep the scene alive’ in an article by Alternative Press where the famed vocalist filled the publication in on what he feels is the best of the best in Canadian music, the band’s praises are sung far and wide. Alt-Press went on to call the band “heavy in an original fashion,” and say that “Toronto should be proud of these up-and-comers.”

Today we are very excited to be teaming up with Napoleon to give our readers and exclusive behind the scenes look at the making of their music video for ‘Heartless’! Check it out below.

The inspiration behind the Heartless video was us trying to get away from the standard “the band performing the song in a dark eerie room” video that we’ve done so many times before. We really liked the idea of having a story component, but we really also wanted to show off just how fun a Napoleon show is, so we put the two together and out came the video for Heartless.

This is the first time we’ve ever had a storyline in a music video. Mya Manion plays a character who struggles with her religious beliefs (which is what the song is about) and makes some drastic decisions as a result, but the story doesn’t end there – the story will see its completion in the next video we release.

This was also by a mile the most fun we have ever had making a video. I have a buddy who owns a house venue in Toronto (The Bunker) and we asked him if it would be okay for us to make our video there and throw a small little house party/show – so we did and a bunch of our friends came to hang out for a few hours and moshed while we pretended to play the song over and over and over. We even played a real set after that was only audience requests and that was a ton of fun too!

I hope people are able to see what kind of energy Napoleon brings to the stage through this video, as well as getting excited for the next video, because our character’s story doesn’t end with Heartless…
