King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard with Geese at Budweiser Stage

As dusk fell over Toronto, the Budweiser Stage transformed into a sonic playground for fans of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The Australian psych-rock maestros took the stage with a fervour that was impossible to ignore, delivering a set that showcased their unparalleled versatility and frenetic energy.

The band, known for their genre-defying sound and relentless creativity, launched into a high-octane performance that seamlessly wove through their eclectic discography. The crowd, a sea of enthusiastic faces, responded with electrifying energy, matching the band’s intensity note for note.

The setlist featured tracks from their extensive catalogue. A heavy start to the show with songs from Infest the Rats Nest and PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. A showcase of three songs from the latest release, Flight b741, filled in the mid section before Stu brought out the flute for Hot Water to the audience’s delight. Highlights for me were Robot Stop and Gamma Knife from Nonagon Infinity. Each song was a testament to the band’s ability to blend elements of rock, psych, and funk into a cohesive and exhilarating experience. The show finished with the band congregating at centre stage for an electronic dance party. A “synth suite” from The Silver Cord including Extinction and the debut of Set.

A stunning kaleidoscope of colours and patterns made for a visually captivating show, complementing the band’s dynamic performance. Light shows synchronized with the music created a hypnotic atmosphere, enhancing the overall sensory overload that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are known for.

The band’s charisma was undeniable. Frontman Stu Mackenzie led the charge with an infectious enthusiasm that seemed to energize the entire venue. Joey, Cookie and Stu engaged the crowd numerous times. Discussing which bar to go to after the show and the break dance stylings of hometown legend Raygun.

In the end, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard at Budweiser Stage was an immersive experience that left fans charged up long after the final note faded. With their genre-bending sound and boundless energy, the band proved once again why they remain one of the most innovative and captivating acts in modern rock.
