The Technology That Decides Every Spin Inside Online Slots

Most people’s thought process of how online slots are developed goes no further than reels spinning, animations, graphics and the results appearing on the screen. In reality, a lot more goes on behind the scenes. Not least, the mathematics behind every spin. Each game includes technology that integrates mathematical formulas to ensure fair, random spin-bet results. The most well-known of these is the RNG (Random Number Generator).

Moreover, the technology governing how these mathematical formulas interact must comply with the regulatory rules of the jurisdiction in which real players will access online slots.

The Companies That Determine The Results of Every Spin

Software providers are behind the development of the slot games listed at online casinos. They’re responsible for designing every aspect of a slot game, from its features, graphics and reel mechanics to the underlying algorithms and mathematics that determine results. The mathematical systems they create play a central role in determining how slot outcomes are generated.

While the main focus for players is typically a slot’s visual and gameplay elements, the technology operating beneath the reels is equally as important. These are the systems that are designed to ensure the slot provides random results while also performing according to its intended payout model. To understand how this technology works together, we have to look further than just the RNG and examine the wider mathematical framework used in slot design.

Mathematics Extends Beyond Random Number Generators

The mathematics behind each and every spin goes even deeper than just randomised outcomes delivered by a random number generator. While the RNG determines the individual outcomes of spins, it also works alongside additional mathematical models that determine how each spin delivers those results over an extended period.

Probability tables are used in the creation of slot games to define how often certain symbols appear, bonus rounds are triggered, and payouts are distributed. In these tables, developers are able to assign specific probabilities to different outcomes. These processes give game designers control over the balance between common and rare events.

Another mathematical component built into a slot’s design is RTP, or return to player percentage. It represents the theoretical percentage of the stakes a game is designed to return over an extended period of time. Therefore, it provides players with an idea of how a slot is likely to perform over the long term.

A slot’s volatility also comes into play. It determines the typical size and frequency of the wins paid out in accordance with the RTP model used. Slots with a high volatility tend to pay out less frequently but in larger amounts, while the opposite is typically true of slots with a low volatility. Essentially, it allows slots to offer different playing experiences, even if they have an identical RTP.

How Regulation Influences RNGs

In Ontario, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario’s (AGCO) Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming and RNG guidance illustrate how regulation can shape how software providers implement randomisation. These standards require RNG outputs to be statistically independent, show no detectable patterns or correlations with previous results, and remain unpredictable, with game outcomes not biased by stake size or player history.

To meet AGCO’s requirements, operators and gaming‑related suppliers must ensure that games, RNGs and critical gaming systems are certified by an AGCO‑registered independent testing laboratory before going live, and recertified when material changes are made. Certification testing confirms that the game behaves as approved and achieves its expected return to player (RTP) performance.

Independent Testing Forms Part of the Approval Process

Game developers can choose from a selection of trusted third-party testing companies registered with the Registrar. The list includes reputable algorithm testing firms, such as eCOGRA, BMM Testlabs and Gaming Laboratories International.

To ensure results remain fair, testing is not a one-off. It is required not only before a new game can be launched, but also following material software changes and as part of ongoing compliance requirements.

How Licensing Software Provider Influences Online Slot Results

In most regulated markets, game developers must hold a licence with the relevant regulatory authority before they can supply games to online casinos in the same jurisdiction. For instance, licensing bodies such as the UKGC, iGaming Ontario and the Malta Gaming Authority all require software providers to hold a B2B game supply licence. In these iGaming markets, developers are therefore accountable for the integrity of the technology that delivers the results of every spin under the conditions set forth in the licensing agreement.

Before a licence is awarded, the provider must demonstrate that it has the technical and compliance systems in place to supply its games to online casinos. This is step one. Once approved, the provider must obtain a certificate of fairness for each game from an algorithm testing company approved by the licensing authority.

Technology Underpins Every Licensed Slot

From a player’s perspective, the effort that goes into designing an online slot is in the artwork, UX design and bonus mechanics, which are the surface-level mechanics they see when playing a game. However, the complexity of the underlying mathematics of RNGs and the regulatory compliance processes built into every game to ensure fair results is often overlooked. Essentially, the graphics and gameplay deliver the fun, while behind the scenes, the integrity of game results and the overall reputation of the iGaming industry rest on the technology that determines every spin in online slots.
