Slow Pulp, one of the most beloved bands in indie rock, will release their highly anticipated new album, Melodie, on September 18th via ANTI- and have shared their The Adam Friedland Show performance, which includes stripped down renditions of previously released single “Better Man” and two new, unheard songs, “Yellow and Green” and “Slip Away.” While “Better Man” is a “burst of hooky, emotional indie rock” (Stereogum), “Yellow and Green” and “Slip Away” revel in the band’s knack for “power-pop dreaminess and patient moodiness” (Chicago Tribune).
Album opener “Yellow and Green” is Melodie’s most retrospective, seasonal track. Beyond its thematic significance, the track’s title is a shoutout to the Green Bay Packers, an organization that counts Slow Pulp’s Emily Massey and Henry Stoehr’s families among its roughly 539,000 partial owners. “Slip Away,” conversely, is the album’s closer, written by Stoehr. “Walked to the hardware store / I guess you don’t know me anymore,” Massey sings. While unassuming, it might be the album’s most devastating lyric. “I was in my early 20s and out of control and alienating myself, and I was walking to the Ace Hardware in Madison and saw a couple of people I used to know and then saw them ignore me,” says Stoehr, who wrote the song. It’s engineered to absolutely ruin anyone who’s ever felt the need to retreat within themselves to avoid becoming a burden on the people around them.
