The IFOA began in 1980 with a mandate to bring together the best writers of contemporary world literature. Today, IFOA involves 118 authors from 39 countries who participate in readings, interviews, lectures, round table discussions, and public book signings. Having moved away from the festival’s previously sole focus on literary fiction, the IFOA now encompasses authors from all genres – non-fiction, genre writing, graphic novels, and even stand-up comedy.
In addition to the regular festivities, the IFOA has a “Writing Scotland” focus in honour of a $90,000 grant from the Edinburgh International Festival. This focus will feature three round table events in partnership with the Edinburgh organization and brings a roster of world-renown Scottish writers and Canadian authors of Scottish descent to the event.
