Fun at Sound Academy – June 5, 2011

Photos by Stephen McGill and Review by Taylor Luftig

At first listen, the crowd seemed unsusceptible to the unfamiliar tunes of Foxy and Fun, mostly standing stationary for the first couple songs of each set. Although after being exposed to a few of fun’s whimsical pop tunes and being dubbed zombies by Nate Ruess, the crowd took his statement as a challenge and finally showed that they knew the meaning of audience participation. Apparently all they needed was the bands’ life appreciation anthem ‘Barlights’ to help them feel alive on Sunday night. Ruess riled up the crowd with his declaration of love for Toronto, and surprisingly so, The Raptors, showing that he was no stranger to the crowds’ beloved city. Despite the absence of the band’s guitarist Jack Antonoff and the addition of Steel Train’s Evan Winiker, the chemistry on stage created a vibe that by the end of their last song ‘Take Your Time (Coming Home)’, reached every attendee in the room.
