2016 Year in Review Staff Picks- Michael Natale

Everyday we will be posting a year end survey submitted by team members, they appear unedited with contributors told to interpret questions how ever they see fit. -Dakota, Music Editor

How long have you been with Live in Limbo and what do you do for the site?

I have been with Live in Limbo since September 2015, and contribute live show reviews.

What were your three favourite albums of 2016?

Frank Ocean — Blonde

Ariana Grande — Dangerous Woman

The Weeknd — Starboy

(sorry, Bey)

What was the most underrated album of 2016?

These questions are too hard.

I’m doing a toss up between: Angel Olsen — My Woman; and The Radio. Dept —Running Out Of Love

What was your favourite Canadian album of 2016?

Carly Rae Jepsen — Emotion B Side

(because have you even listened to it? Like, Cry? Roses? FEVER? Just go. Go and listen and improve your life [you can skip Store tho])

What were your three favourite songs of 2016?

Lady Gaga — Diamond Heart

(because we’re all out of school go-goin’ and some asshole definitely broke out heart)

 Frank Ocean — White Ferrari

(because mind over matter is magic)

 Kehlani — CRZY

(because if I gotta be a bitch I’mma be a bad one)

How many concerts and/or festivals did you go to in 2016?

2016 has been a bit of a light year for seeing shows, personally :/

I’d say, not as many as I’d like, but more than your average bear.

What were your three favourite concerts of the year?

Kehlani at Time Festival, LCD Sound System at Wayhome, and…Rihanna for Anti tour? No, that can’t be right…

What was your favourite festival you attended of the year?

Wayhome? for the full lineup. But, Field Trip had Robyn, so…

What festival had the best lineup (regardless if you attended or not)?

Lollapolooza or Wayhome

What/who was the biggest musical disappointment (live or album) for you?

I’m about to commit some sort of sacrilege, but something about Adele’s live show felt “off”. That may be a very subjective, isolated experience of disappointment on my end, but songs that are typically so intimate and moving ended up stale. Her songs especially suffer from over-play, but Adele didn’t seem to breathe much new life into them live, and it felt very disconnected in an area setting. Admittedly, I was a gong-show during “Someone Like You”—balling everywhere, like everyone else—but, that song and those lyrics really do have a life of their own at this point.

Album disappointments? You mean like, M.I.A—AIM? Tegan and Sara — Love You To Death? James Blake — The Colour In Anything? Charli XCX — Vroom Vroom EP? I’ll stop here. Put your stones down.

In your opinion, what was the biggest music story?

A toss up between Bowie and Prince’s passing’s, both overshadowing any amount of un-promoted album drops respectively (sorry, Radiohead and Bey, again).

What band did you see live for the first time that really impressed you?

I was expectantly pleased with both Phosphorescent and Bahamas, and glad that they met expectations. (sorry Adele, I probably overhyped you tbh)

What was your favourite new musical discovery of 2016?

I felt late to the Troye Sivan — Blue Neighborhood party, but it hit me TOO hard this year. Also, hometown girl Charlotte Day Wilson debuted nicely.

Who were you disappointed to miss seeing live this year?

Probably everything during an illness at Wayhome—including Major Lazer, Vince Staples, and, oh yeah, Arcade Fire…

Who should we be looking out for in 2017?

Dua Lipa has some great Pop things in store I believe. Kehlani has been pushing out awesome singles with CRZY and Distraction ahead of upcoming sophomore album, SweetSexySavage, so look out for that. I’m hoping Drake makes up for Views with More Life. I’m sure Katy Perry will show her and her “feminist” angle sometime soon (but actually, I’m rooting for her to pull something interesting off [the dreams I dream]). The XX are due to outperform their sophomore record, but I shouldn’t get my hopes up. And as much as I hate to mention this problematic pumpkin (trust me, this love/hate game is a TRU struggle, friends), we can’t ever count Azealia Banks out, can we?

Who’s going to be headlining (or at least playing) all the 2017 festivals?

No idea, but I hope Frank shows up.

What was your favourite review or photo set you did for LiL this year?

Seeing Julia Holter live was definitely an interesting stand out moment of the year.

Is there anything else you want to say about 2016 or predict about 2017?

Thank you, Gaga, for Joanne, even though some people weren’t that impressed. They probably liked ArtPop.

Thank you, Kaytranada, for breaking out in a big way, and for remixing Solange’s Cranes In the Sky.

Thank you, NAO, I missed you.

Thank you, Rostam and Leithasuer, for finding one another and making something, about people who lost something.

Thank you, Zayn, for trying to pretend you knew what you were doing when you snatched Frank’s main producer for your album—and it ACTUALLY paid off.

Thank you Frank, for all of it.

Dear 2017, don’t let Katy f*ck this up.

Praise Bey Blue Ivy,
