Today LiL is very excited to be teaming up with Canadian Country artist, Matt Morson, to go behind the scenes on his latest single “True Country”.
Written by Morson, “True Country” is an authentic ode to the artist’s own country way of life, and also represents his self-coined “outlaw country” sound, which in this case features high-energy vibes, a distinct country swagger, deft touches of heavy rock, and a lyrical journey that reflects Morson’s core as a dedicated singer-songwriter.
“True Country” comes after two successful singles in 2021, “Tailgate Patio” and “Take a Chance”, which earned a combined 500,000 streams on Spotify. Morson has also earned a reputation as an enthusiastic and seasoned stage performer, having opened for the likes of Paul Brandt, JoJo Mason, Bobby Wills, Doc Walker, George Canyon, and River Town Saints, and showcased at Nashville North, the Canadian National Exhibition, and most recently, as a virtual artist at Canadian Music Week in 2021.
Morson has also organized a series of “Who We Are” music showcases around Ontario to support the release. He’s also one of the performers and co-organizers of first-ever Music from the Vineyard Country Festival at Terra Estate Winery (featuring Andrew Hyatt, Madeline Merlo, and others) on July 23rd.
Well, hello there.
Matt Morson here coming to you from the outside world! Seriously though thank you for having me. I’m a Canuck country singer/songwriter and I reside in Nobleton, Ontario. I look forward to shedding some light on my tune, “True Country”!
Inspiration:
To be honest, the inspiration for this song was the fact that surprisingly there isn’t already a song like this. I wanted to make something for everyone from all walks of life. Whether you are just getting by or more affluent, I wanted something that was different yet understandable. I basically just pulled experiences from my own life and my own journey. “True Country” came to me because when I went through my own life and talked to people around me about theirs, it just made sense to write this.
Creation:
The song was written by me. Lyrically, I wanted to take a friendly “shot” if you will and the mainstream country culture. All in good fun of course. Once I had the lyrics down, me and my band just jammed the song over and over for about a year. Every snare, every ghost note, every bass line, hell every conceivable way to sing it. We tried it all until it felt right. Then my producer and I kept massaging it until it was what I had envisioned. Honestly, its always a bit of a pain doing it the way we do it but you cant deny the result. It’s both a rock sounding feel (my style) and a country story and inspiration. We wanted a summer song and I’m proud of the end product.
The Audience:
It’s funny. I have a personal philosophy about being an artist: If everyone likes what you are doing, you either found a magic formula or you sold out. The irony is I wrote this song with the intended audience being everyone. It’s inviting and inclusive. I want people to hear the song and let their imagination play out. Let them feel their own version of “True Country”. So either I found the magic formula or… I missed.
Thank you for allowing me to rant about my song and process! Check out “True Country”!
