Concert Reviews

André 3000 at Massey Hall

André 3000 is the headlining act of the TD Jazz festival this year. When he dropped a new album in November of 2023, no one anticipated what was to come.

I listened to the album when it came out and I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this incredible hip-hop artist had released a new age jazz flute album. As much as I am open to all types of music, I felt I was never in the right environment to truly enjoy the music.

Friday night at Massey Hall, a boisterous crowd waited for the early set time show to start. As the band took their places a hush fell over the crowd. A silence I haven’t heard at a concert in a very long time. Astonishingly quiet. This was the perfect environment to experience the music of New Blue Sun.

The sounds emanating from the stage conjured vibes of a lush rainforest. Chirping notes mimicking birds and wispy billows of dense air created a tonal atmosphere. The dark and foggy stage with beams of light piercing the stage seemed like sunlight breaking through the canopy of a steamy, humid tropical forest.

During one of the few brief moments while interacting with the crowd, it was explained that the band is mostly improving every night. The dimly lit, foggy stage made it challenging to tell who and what were making certain sounds. Carlos Niño and Surya Botofasina seemed to take care of the heavy lifting. Creating textures and rhythms for the other members to fill in the voids.

At times I would close my eyes and allow my sense of hearing to elevate. I’m not sure it was the intention but it felt like that was the purpose of this album and music. Put your phone away. Listen to your environment. Feel the energy. It was a blissful evening. I am at one with the universe and ready for the long weekend!
