MIESHA AND THE SPANKS RELEASE NEW SINGLE “SMILING”

Calgary’s punk rock duo Miesha and The Spanks release their new single, “Smiling”. This song struts with the snap of the snare drum driving the verse straight into a big, brash, singalong chorus. Go ahead, roll down your windows for this summer anthem! “Smiling” follows “Cut My Bangs” and “Fight My Body” in the lead up to the band’s new EP, VISIONS, set for release on September 18 via SUPERCONNECTED.  Produced by JUNO Award winner Hill Kourkoutis (Aysanabee, Royal Wood, SATE), VISIONS is loaded with raw, catchy rallying cries that explore themes of self-esteem, gender norms, Indigeneity and stoicism.  Pre-save / Pre-order the EP

“Smiling” is about the breaking point between keeping up a strong front and complete collapse, as described through fuzzed-out 90’s grunge with a hint of riot grrrl quips and yips. The soundtrack to literally ‘smiling through it’, to be played on repeat while the world crashes down around you.

Miesha penned the song as a way to work through some tough times she’s been facing, making a revelation that you never know what might be going on behind a resilient smile – “For the last couple of years my mom has been fighting what’s now stage 4 cancer. I’ve been putting on this face that everything’s fine – mostly for my kids, but also just to stay sane. You wouldn’t know she was sick to see her, because she’s just so strong – and of course I know that’s a loaded thing to say, because for all I know, she’s just smiling through it as well.”

Working with Miesha and Sean was such a blast,” comments producer, Hill Kourkoutis. “They’re insanely talented, fearless collaborators, and completely committed to chasing the rawest, realest, grittiest version of every song. ‘Smiling’ captures that spirit perfectly. It’s loud, messy, cathartic, and full of the angst and rage that comes with pushing forward through life while everything around you feels like it’s falling apart. That is the realest realness.
