Behind the EP: “Up All Night” – Annika Catharina

Breakout Canadian country artist Annika Catharina is set to release her sophomore EP, “Up All Night“, today (July 31st) across all streaming platforms.

Produced by The Renaissance (Dan Botch and Garrett Ward), “Up All Night” expands beyond the love and heartbreak themes of Annika’s 2025 debut, “You and Me”, to explore new ground while retaining her distinct country essence and adding deliberate touches of rock and folk.

Annika says, “This EP is inspired by things that can keep us up at night – ideas, stories, songs that make us want to dance, and the deeper thoughts we have as we experience life and discover who we are. ‘Up All Night’ navigates the balance between having fun, embracing chaos, learning from the past, and looking ahead with confidence and self-awareness.”

Leading with honest storytelling on a country canvas infused with rock and folk energy, “Up All Night” marks a bold next chapter for Annika as she continues to establish herself as one of Canada’s most exciting rising country talents and we’re so excited to be teaming up with her to give our readers an exclusive behind the scenes look at each song on the EP!

BEHIND THE EP: ANNIKA CATHARINA – “UP ALL NIGHT”

My sophomore EP, “Up All Night”, is a 7-song collection of the thoughts, memories, and moments that keep me up at night.

From moving on after heartbreak and finding love to growing up, overthinking, and chasing carefree moments, each song tells a different part of that story. I can’t wait for everyone to hear where these songs came from and the stories behind them.

“Won’t Be You Tonight”

I had the title “Won’t Be You Tonight” and the idea of finally letting go of the person who did you wrong before I went into the writing room with Aidan Johnson-Bujold and Doug Folkins. I had also been listening to a lot of Miranda Lambert and Elle King beforehand, so I was feeling inspired and a little sassy. We wanted to write a breakup song that wasn’t sad. It’s about getting dressed up, going out with your girlfriends, and deciding you’re done wasting time on someone who doesn’t deserve it, no checking your phone or answering his calls. It was the perfect song to open the EP because it sets the tone right away. I’ve already been playing it live, and it’s quickly become one of my favourite songs in the set.

“Better Hands”

Doug Folkins came into the writing session with the title “Better Hands,” and from there Aidan Johnson-Bujold and I were excited to write it. It felt so natural because I really am in better hands. After writing so many songs about heartbreak, it was nice to write one about finding the right person. It’s about the kind of love that makes you feel safe, confident, and at home. I hope it reminds people that the right love should bring peace, not confusion.

“Under Covers”

When Wes Mack walked into the room with the title, the first verse, and the chorus, Dan Botch, Garrett Ward, and I all knew we had something fun on our hands. It turned into a carefree anthem about women taking control, making memories with their friends, and not caring what anyone else thinks.

“Cartwheels”

This song is extra special and personal to me because it was the first song Jada Leroux and I ever wrote together. I had the title “Cartwheels” written down in my phone, and I remember saying I couldn’t remember the last time I did one! That turned into a conversation about growing up and missing that carefree version of yourself.

“Up All Night”

The title track came together with Wes Mack, Dan Botch, Garrett Ward, and Bailey Jacobson. It’s about those nights when your mind won’t slow down and memories keep replaying long after someone is gone. I think everyone has experienced lying awake overthinking something. Once we finished this song, I knew it had to be the title of the EP.

“Dancing With The Devil”

This song came from a writing session with Spencer Burns where we talked about finally recognizing the red flags for what they are. Looking back, the signs were always there, you just weren’t ready to see them. It’s about realizing you deserve better, and I love that this song lets me lean into the rock side of my sound.

“Old Habit”

The second time Jada Leroux and I got together to write, I had the title “Old Habit” saved in my phone because I knew I wanted to write about leaving a bad habit behind. We both loved the idea of using smoking as a metaphor for someone you know you should have walked away from a long time ago, even though quitting isn’t easy. That sparked a conversation about how hard it can be to break unhealthy patterns, even when you know they’re not good for you. At its core, it’s about choosing yourself, knowing your worth, and finding the strength to move forward. I think we all have something that’s harder to let go of than we’d like to admit.
