Album Review: Alyssa Reid – The Game

The opening track features Alyssa accompanied solely by a piano, almost as a challenge to the listener to dare say anything against her raw talent. The track seamlessly flows into her second single “The Game” which is a perfect combination of the pop and R&B vibe that the album beholds. What follows after are tracks packed with heartbreak and the art of moving on mashed into either dance hits such as “XO” or R&B infused tracks like “Talk Me Down”.  Each song has a distinct vibe which makes for a unique listen, especially the first time through. Unfortunately the club-focused tracks take away from the talent of Alyssa’s voice but are thankfully limited to only a few. What really separates Alyssa Reid from becoming another generic female R&B singer is the track “Burned” with its blues guitar undertones, simplicity of arrangement, and Alyssa’s distinctively beautiful voice cutting through.  The song is just as raw as the opening track and proves that this girl has the writing and singing chops of a pro. The entire record is a debut to be proud of, and leaves Alyssa Reid room to grow into a certified Canadian pop gem.
