“Disco4 :: Part II” – HEALTH

The Los Angeles industrial/noise rock trio, HEALTH, are back with their sixth studio offering Disco4 :: Part II which was just released today via Loma Vista Recordings.

Before I dive into Disco4 :: Part II, I feel like I need to explain Disco4 :: Part I. When HEALTH released Part I in 2020, I was a little bit confused. Prior to this, a ‘Disco’ album accompanied each HEALTH album where the band remixed their own songs, but this time around Part I contained brand new songs with some incredible collaborators (including: 100gecs, Youth Code, and Soccer Mommy just to name a few) leaving only two tracks purely HEALTH songs. On paper, I felt like this was overwhelming and it wouldn’t translate well through it’s execution, but boy, was I wrong. The band managed to throw a bunch of unlikely collaborators into a melting pot while sprinkling in some if their HEALTH magic, to push the boundaries and come up with some pretty unique tracks.

Like Part I, the latest installment contains 12 new tracks with an all-new set of collaborators. Recruiting help from artists such as Poppy, Nine Inch Nails, Lamb of God, and Ho99o9, this album was pretty heavy leaning from start to finish. The album opener ‘Dead Flowers’ featuring Poppy, creates a very delicate and eerie atmosphere for the album. Poppy’s haunting vocals paired really well with the band’s raw synths and guitar distortions. One of the surprising highlights for me was ‘MURDER DEATH KILL’ featuring Ada Rook and PlayThatBoiZay. With the contrast in genres, I wasn’t expecting Rook’s shrieks to help pave the way for a seamless transition into PlayThatBoyZay’s rap, and I found myself revising this track a lot.

As they continue to grow, they continue to defy the odds and it’s clear that HEALTH has managed to master the craft of seamlessly blurring the lines between noise rock, electro-pop, and industrial metal. Disco4 :: Part II is definitely something you need to be in the mood for, but when you are, it’s fantastic. I’d suggest anyone who likes heavy leaning music and is looking for something new to give this a spin, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Disco4 :: Part II is available everywhere today and you can order a copy from the band’s website. Be sure to catch HEALTH as they tour across North America this fall with Perturbator and Street Sects, which includes a stop at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on September 9th.
