Parallels at Harbourfront Centre

Harbourfront Centre, July 11, 09, 7:00pm

Parallels hail right from home in Toronto, Canada and last night they took on the Redpath Stage during Harbourfront Centre’s Breaks, Beats and Culture Festival. These young folks showed dynamics and energy and I feel that they have the potential to be one of Toronto’s next big music exports. Front woman Holly Dodson displayed enthusiasm as we pranced around the unusual 360 degree stage, possibly an odd experience for any band, but nonetheless they captured the wondering crowd into their ambient and ultra-styled songs.  Cam Findlay, former drummer of Crystal Castles, pulled over some of the similar sounds from his previous band but also added a slightly different flavour which I think fits Parallels’ style perfectly. Their CD entitled Ultralight is very pleasing to the ears if you are fond of ultra-lounges and that sort of chilling out. Overall, I hope they keep up the hard work as their big tour will be starting soon including a spot at the Time Festival on July 25 at the Sound Academy. These guys have a full-length album currently in the works and are planning a release date this fall. Expect to see much more from Toronto’s Parallels in the near future.
