***UPDATE*** It appears as though the Red Sox have claimed LHP Billy Wagner off waivers from the Mets, as two sources have now reported it. If this is true, a deal should be done quickly. Wagner is owed about $2.5M for the remainder of the season.

NHL

– Senators F Dany Heatley reiterated his desire for a trade Friday, saying he’s unhappy with his diminished role. Heatley spoke during a conference call, the first time he’s commented publicly since he asked for a trade in the spring. “When I signed in Ottawa two years ago, I felt it was to be an integral part of the team. Over the last two years and more recently over the past year, I feel my role was diminished. This past season, it diminished a lot more. I’m a player who can play in a lot of different situations. I don’t feel I was given that role on the team.”Heatley did say that if he remains a Sen next month, he will report to camp. “I have a contract and I’m going to honour that contract. At the same time, I think we know there are other teams out there who are interested, and hopefully something can get done.” The two-time 50-goal scorer is in the middle of a six-year/$45M extension he signed less than two years ago.

– The Wild are continuing to speak with F Alex Tanguay. The Wild are expected to offer him a deal of up to $3M.

NBA

– Despite just recently acquiring him, there are rumblings that Cavaliers F Shaquille O’Neal will be placed on the trade block sometime in February. It isn’t clear how far out of the playoff race the Cavs would have to be in order for this to happen or exactly how the team would go about making such a decision, but it remains very possible, since his contract is up next summer. If another team feels that Shaq is their missing piece, the Cavs would potentially shop him, as it would save them $20M for the huge free agent summer of 2010, money that needs to go towards re-signing F LeBron James.

– According to NY Newsday, the Knicks are no longer interested in FA G Allen Iverson. A.I.’s future teams are narrowing – with the Knicks out, as well as the Heat since the acquisition of G Quentin Richardson, the list of prospective suitors falls to the Clippers, Grizzlies and Bobcats. The Bobcats, of course, are run by Larry Brown, who supposedly didn’t have a great relationship with Iverson when the pair were with the 76ers together. But that seems to be all water under the bridge to Brown, who says he’d love to have Iverson on his team again. A.I. is going to command massive money and massive minutes, which makes the crowded backcourt of the Bobcats an unlikely suitor. Stay tuned.

MLB

– Braves 3B Chipper Jones family has a 10,000-acre ranch, the Double Dime, in southwest Texas where the dead body of a 22-year-old Mexican national has been found. The body was apparently found in an area that isn’t visited on a daily basis, according to Chipper’s dad, Larry Jones Sr. The assumption is that the man entered the country illegally and could not handle the high heat and drought conditions (and he’s from Mexico!?).

– The Red Sox have released 1B/OF Chris Duncan. Duncan spent less than a month with Boston after being acquired in the Julio Lugo trade. He struggled in 85 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket, hitting. 188 with two homers.

– Mets GM Omar Minaya said Friday that the Mets have no intention of placing OF Gary Sheffield on waivers or releasing him. Minaya also claims Sheffield never asked for a contract extension. Hmm…

Staying on the Mets, SI reports that LHP Billy Wagner has been claimed off waivers. With the weekend as a buffer, the Mets and the other team involved have three days to hammer out a deal. The Mets should be very motivated to get something done. Keep an eye on the Rays and Marlins. Neither team will pay the $2.7M remaining on his deal, so something will have to be reached. Stay tuned.

– According to the Chicago Tribune, the sale of the Cubs to the Ricketts family is “imminent.” The Tribune Co. agreed to the deal over a month ago, but there were mounds of legal documents to sort through before any signatures could be printed. The Ricketts family has agreed to pay about $900M for the team, Wrigley Field and a 25% stake in Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Having a true owner in place could help the Cubs open payroll space this offseason.

WWE

– The latest issue of The Wrestling Observer reports that WWE officials have soured on Beth Phoenix, though details were not specified. The former WWE Women’s Champion went nearly a month without appearing on television and rumours started to surface that her future in the company could be in doubt. To add more fuel to the fire, Rosa Mendes was removed as her associate this past week and instead paired with Carlito. She did, however, beat Kelly Kelly on this week’s edition of WWE Superstars.

– One-half of the WWE Unified Tag Team Champions, Chris Jericho, spoke with the Baltimore Sun. The highlights:

Edge’s Injury: “It was disappointing because I think we had a great story line in the works, with a lot of trips and traps that were going to lead to a certain place. But it was one of those things that the moment it happened you’re like, “Well, OK, what are we going to do now? Back to the drawing board.” You can’t do anything about it. It’s part of what we do. So it was very disappointing.”

Why He Chose Big Show: “Big Show has been a great replacement. Everyone said it had to be Dolph Ziggler or The Miz. No, this is about two world champions at the top of their game who have a certain stature. Yeah, it would help them, but it wouldn’t help me. We’re trying to reinvigorate the tag titles and reinvigorate Big Show as well.”

Raw’s Guest Host Gimmick: “I love it. There are a lot of similarities between Raw and “Saturday Night Live” and there always has been. As far as the guest hosts, some will work, some won’t be so good and some will suck. That’s the chance you take with outsiders. Shaq really got it; Seth Green was great; and Freddie Prinze was really good. I look forward every week to seeing who is going to be on.”

WWE In Crisis: “We’re in a crisis period in WWE and we need to build new guys. When Shawn Michaels came back to Raw, he said, “Whose been built since I left?” On Smackdown we’ve built [John] Morrison and [Dolph] Ziggler and Cryme Tyme. The Intercontinetal title has been rebuilt now with Rey Mysterio. But I can’t tell you on Raw who has been built over the last six months. They better do it soon, because when this generation of performers is gone, who will replace them?”

Couldn’t agree more. While SD! lacks the “starpower”, the wrestling is far superior. Hopefully RAW kicks it into gears with The Miz, Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston, etc.

– PWI has named Mickie James number one in the second annual PWI Female 50, which ranks the best 50 women’s wrestlers in the United States in 2009. James succeeds multiple time TNA Women’s Knockout Champion Awesome Kong, who was ranked first in last year’s chart.

TNA

– After a rash of recent changes in TNA, there is a feeling that if Vince Russo is ultimately let go, it won’t occur until after the Bound for Glory PPV in October. TNA has creative plans in place throug
h Bound for Glory, which is designed to be a WrestleMania-like blow-off event. I pray to the Lord that Russo is let go so that TNA can go back to the time when it kicked ass.

– TNA is introducing Knockout Tag Team Championships. So stupid. I love how they have like 50 people and 5 belts, while WWE has about 100 people and 7 belts.
