Tsonga serves out Murray at Rogers Cup

13th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France reached the final four of the 2014 Rogers Cup, with a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 win over Britain’s Andy Murray. Tsonga win sets him up to meet Bulgaria’s seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov.

Tsonga picked up another upset victory by knocking off Murray and earlier a convincing win over 1st-seeded Novak Djokovic. The match was very back and forth without any player losing serve until into the 2nd set. Tsonga’s serve proved to be the beg difference. Tsonga had18 aces over Murray and won 83 percent of first serves. He served out the first-set with an impressive 218 (km/h) ace. He was explosive and very quick to defend against Murray’s relentless fight.

Murray was in for a much quicker-paced match than his first match against Nick Kyrgios, then he got a free pass to the next round when his opponent was injured in practice. Murray probably worked on his backhand in that time, preparing it for the non-stop shots from Tsonga. It seemed every Tsonga serve was to Murray’s backhand. Murray had previously won his last eight meetings against Tsonga, but, at the end of the day, that was just a statistic that meant nothing as Tsonga overcame the odds again.

The 2014 Rogers Cup is getting better with every competition, the tennis is amazing to watch and worth the price of the ticket. Thankfully the rain stopped over the last few days and there have been few delays in the schedule.
