Evan Sue-Ping’s 2017 Year in Review – Staff Picks

Every year we ask our talented contributors to send us their thoughts on the past twelve months. These surveys appear untouched, and the only instruction was to answer the question however they see fit. –Dakota Arsenault, Music Editor

Morrissey. Wish he would just keep his mouth shut now.

Fake Palms

Angel Olsen

This year the Horseshoe Tavern celebrated its 70th birthday, do you have a fond memory or favourite all time show from the club?

Hard to pick as I have so many. One that pops to mind is the Dead Weather in 2008. Seeing Jack White rip from that close up was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Legendary afterparty as well.

In your opinion, what was the biggest music story?

The death of Tom Petty. A tragic loss as it stands but the “is he, isn’t he” social media lead-up was a shitshow.

Is there anything else you want to say about 2017 or predict about 2018?

2017 was a drain on our collective well-being. A lot of great music was created in its wake. Think I listened to and loved more deeply than I have in the past few years. I’m doubtful that the climate in 2018 will be much different, at least from the onset. As always, we need to lean on music to ease some of these pains. It’s always there for us. I believe 2018 will produce some classics.
