Bishop Briggs at the Danforth Music Hall

Bishop Briggs kicked off her latest tour in Toronto last Friday night, bringing her unique-sounding voice to previous hits as well as debuting new material. Her latest album, Champion, will be dropping November 8th. In the surprise announcement earlier that day on instagram, she announced her latest album, Champion, would be dropping November 8th. Along with the album, she also announced the release of the first single, “Jekyll & Hide”, the likes of which the audience got to hear for the first time on Friday night. The new tune is destined to be a banger, with soulful vocals and a killer bass line delivering a heavy rock punch.
The show started with a countdown clock to get the crowd hyped up to great effect, transitioning to a rousing rendition of “Champion”. Adorable and smiling, Briggs brought energy and gratitude to the night, bouncing around the stage while flexing her considerable vocal prowess. At one point she appeared overwhelmed with emotion, tearfully thanking the adoring crowd for their support while talking about the new record. As it was the first show of the tour, it was clear that some sound issues will need to be worked out as at times her voice was not as solid. Despite that, favourites like “Wild Horses”, “Dark Side”, and a stripped down version of “Dream” were well received. To the delight of the audience, she performed a surprise medley of covers including Twenty One Pilot’s “Stressed Out” and a rousing rendition of My Chemical Romance’s “ Welcome To The Black Parade” that touched the emo hearts of everyone. Aided by the wall of light behind her and the musicians on a platform above, she hammered home her hit single “River” to close out the night on a high note.
