Song Premiere : “Dear Brother” – Aspen Jacobsen

Aspen Jacobsen’s star shines brighter than the sun. Her unique talent for connecting with an audience with her emotionally moving lyrics and soulful vocals is what makes her an award-winning singer/songwriter. She currently attends Interlochen Arts Academy as a singer-songwriter major where she explores jazz improvisation, the music industry, and backing up musicians of all different genres.

Aspen’s insight and intent are beyond her 17 years. She aspires to make folk music more palatable to younger audiences while continuing to carry on the tradition of writing music of the people, for the people. Her new single, “Dear Brother,” takes on an emotional and vulnerable side of Aspen. “Dear Brother” is a very personal statement on mental health with a sound and style that recalls prime Joni Mitchell. This song was inspired by Aspen’s brother who struggles with Autism and depression.

Disturbed by her brother’s struggles, Aspen wrote this song in the bathroom one night as her roommates slept. She played it at her school’s open mic the next day and left the room heavy with emotion. Aspen hopes this song is relatable and comforting for those who have a loved one struggling with autism, depression, or other challenges.

Artist Statement : “I think it is one of the fastest songs I’ve written where I immediately felt it was complete. When I was done, I had a sense of calm. The song is therapeutic, raw and heartfelt.”

Her poignant lyrics “It’s more than a diagnosis, that’s what the doctors claim/But they can only triple your dosage, your emotions kept at bay/And it’s just so god damn hollow where your passion used to live/Take another pill to swallow, we’ve got nothing left to give,” leaving any listener feeling charged and feeling right along with Aspen.
