Miesha and The Spanks, comprised of Miesha Louie, a mixed-secwépemc singer-songwriter living in Treaty 7 Territory, and drummer Sean Hamilton, kick off 2026 with the release of the empowering pop-pogo track, “Cut My Bangs”. Their debut single with label, Red Music Rising, the Calgary duo’s song was produced by Juno Award winner, Hill Kourkoutis (Aysanabee, Royal Wood, SATE). “Cut My Bangs” is the pair’s first new music since their 2023 album, Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi, and it’s clear that WCMA’s 2024 Breakout Artist of the Year, Miesha and The Spanks are back, stronger than ever.
Miesha explains that “Cut My Bangs” is loosely based on meeting her husband, but also symbolizes a fresh start. “When you cut your bangs, you know you’re over everything, ready to move on,” reflects Miesha. “I wrote it to commemorate a time in my life where I cut out what I didn’t want anymore, and let myself stumble into something better than I ever could have expected to find. Make the hard decision to let go, and give space for something good to come in.”
2026 marks 10 years that Miesha and Sean have been working together. The two began recording music, releasing their first EP, Stranger, in 2016, with that collection of songs becoming part of their 2018 full album, Girls Girls Girls. Released on Saved By Vinyl, the EP and album were both produced by the Buzzcocks’ Danny Farrant, and his studio partner, Paul Rawson. The album won three 2019 YYC Music Awards – Female Artist, Single of the Year, and Rock Recording of the Year. For their 2021 independently released EP, Singles, the pair worked with West Coast producer and WCMA award winning artist, Leeroy Stagger. They took home the YYC Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year in 2022 for that album.
For the next album, 2023’s Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi, they returned to work again with Farrant and Rawson. This pushed the band to the next level, marked by considerable critical acclaim and awards including the coveted 2024 Breakout Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, CBC’s Searchlight 2023 Outstanding Indigenous Artist for the album’s “Dig Me Out”, and “So Mad” nabbing them YYC’s 2024 Music Award for Single of the Year.
