NXNE 2010: Comanechi @ The Velvet Underground

I got the chance to see Akiko Matsuura at the Mod Club back in March when she came into town to smash some drums with electro rock band The Big Pink. So the news that she’d be back in Toronto for NXNE with her grunge/punk project Comanechi had me quite excited to hear some loud, fast paced, dirty rock.

Dressed in a pink body suit Akiko assaulted the crowd with a fury of screeching vocals and feverish drumming while bandmate Simon Petrovitch provided some heavy grunge guitar to go along.  Comanechi smashed through a short set featuring songs from their release “Crime Of Love” including “Close Enough To Kiss” a song about the benefits of having unprotected sex and the immeasurably fun “Death Of You”. Critics have made much of Akiko Matsuura’s extroverted nature, but hey its just a good healthy dose of pure unadulterated rock and roll fun.
