I Know What I Am (Live Footage, Montreal, QC, Canada):

All right, so I might be basing this band on one song, since they have only a few songs to listen to on their website and I am busy with a bunch of other stuff going on, BUT hear me out, this band sounds amazing in my eyes (or ears that is). I picked up the track I Know What I Am as a free track on iTunes, and obviously like many that use iTunes are usually like “Free? YES PLEASE!”
So I downloaded the track I Know What I Am and lo and behold, I was hooked from the start of the song. The track is very bluesy/rock with a hint of a free-for-all of judges in powdered wigs fighting for the last slice of strawberry rhubarb pie (yeah, that’s right I said it, deal with it). The first thoughts when I heard the lead vocals from the man on guitar, that’d be Russell Marsden, I swore he does such good vocals that Jack White would be jealous. I continued listening with the guitar chugging along, the drummer, Matt Hayward, pounding away on the cymbals and drums and the other vocalist in the band, as well as bass player, Emma Richardson, comes in to join Russell for the vocals, and it just seemed so right. The chemistry of the words within I Know What I Am blends an illustration of verbs and assurance and it just works. As the chorus goes, “It’s alright, it’s okay”. Oh, it’s more than okay guys, you wrote quite a superb song indeed. I then decided to search for this Band of Skulls and found their website www.bandofskulls.com and caught another glimpse of a few more tracks from their debut album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, one that is also available for download called Blood. I’d have to say this band deserves much more attention.
Emma Richardson also does the artwork for the album. Ain’t that great eh? Not having to pay an artist to design the album, just go to the bassist for her good talents. On their website bio, it claims that Emma had an exhibition of her artwork recently called “Meat Me at the Butchers” which was held within the butcher shop that she worked in before her band got off the ground.
The band hails from Southampton, England and has proven that this digital age can gain much fame to a band, which is well deserved in my opinion. This band sounds great and I hope to hear much from them in the future. You can check them out on some tour dates in Canada, including these stops:
