Mumford & Sons @ Sound Academy

As I made my way up to the Sound Academy a good while after the doors opened I was surprised to still see a line up to get in. I walked into the venue as the first act took the stage. Immediately I sensed a growing energy within the crowd. The venue was packed and full of anticipation. The rise in popularity this band has had in such little time in the city can hardly go unnoticed. The London quarted took the stage and started the set off with the title track “Sigh No More”. By the time the band started into their next song “Roll Away Your Stone” they were enveloped in some wonderful washes of light and had much of the crowd singing along with them. The band continued to play songs from their debut including their big hit ,”Little Lion Man”, “Winter Winds” and “Thistle & Weeds” saving “Dustbowl Dance” and “The Cave” for the end of their performance. It’s quite a big difference to pack Lee’s Palace and then successfully do the same at Sound Academy but with great musicianship, well crafted songs, and tons of emotion on stage I guess anything is possible.

Mumford & Sons played their second gig in Toronto this year selling out the Sound Academy. By all accounts the English folk rockers and their incredibly enthusiastic and loud fans blew the lid off of Lee’s Palace earlier this year. With the success of their album “Sigh No More” along with some steady airplay this show sold out long ago.
