There’s no point in beating around the bush here – Mine is Yours is the first decent rock record to have dropped in 2011. Sure, there have been some other great mentions this past month but who wants dull and grey when they could have alive and vibrant? In swoops this Long Beach quartet with an album bursting with an irresistible momentum from the start of “Mine Is Yours” to the end of “Flying Upside Down”. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it West Coast Rock but the California sunshine certainly didn’t hurt any of the catchy choruses or melodies.
However, despite enlisting producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse) for this record, the band missed including that special something that will take the album from good to great. The single “Louder Than Ever” is a gem and album cuts such as “Skip The Charade” and “Cold Toes On The Cold Floor” are solid but potentially forgettable. Regardless though, Mine Is Yours is still album worth hitting the repeat button on, and Cold War Kids delivered yet another crowd pleaser.
