“Oulala” by Vundabar

This week, I am featuring “Oulala” by Vundabar, self proclaimed as a “Sludgy Jangly Pop” band. This song is featured on their most recent album, “Gawk”. This album was released on July 24^th,2015. The band released this album independently on their own label, Gawk Records.

Vundabar began between two Boston senior highschool students, Brandon Hagen and Drew McDonald. They released their first album in 2013 (Antics), and they have been going since then touring through US and Europe, as well as landing features in both Spin and Vice. All members are only between the ages of 19 and 20, so it is most definitely eye opening to see what three young men can accomplish in just a short amount of time. They have been compared to The Pixies, and I definitely can see that relation.

I really enjoy the vintage and rough sound of this track; yet at the same time it still feels so organic and fresh. This song has some really good hooks, and I enjoy the fluid and soft vocals. There’s something so comforting about having more intense instrumentals going along with a softer voice. Personally, I’m not a fan of the two second guitar intro in the very beginning; I think they could have gone without. With that being said once you get past that, it’s all-good. The riff’s in this are super catchy, and I really enjoy the breakdown/bridge at 2:35; that really does it for me. It makes the song that much more intense, and I think it really ties the whole thing together. I really appreciate the background vocals during this time where he sings “Didn’t you want it, I know that you want it”, building up even more intensity before the chorus repeats. This is a really fun listen, and I really think whoever see’s this needs to check this track out. After all, this is the track that even brought success and attention to their album, so I guess I would call it the “Winning Track”.
