Brittany Howard with Becca Mancari at The Danforth Music Hall

Brittany Howard was in Toronto this weekend for two shows at the Danforth Music Hall. Friday night doubled as the release party for the new album Now What? as well as the kick off to the tour supporting the album.

Becca Mancari got the crowd warmed up with a set that included songs from her album Left Hand released in the summer of 2023. Don’t Even Worry stands out as a wonderful example of Becca and Brittany’s songwriting partnership that goes back almost a decade. You can catch more of Becca on tour around Ontario with Tegan and Sara coming soon in March and April.

The sold out crowd waited in anticipation for Brittany to take the stage. The energy was electric even before the silhouettes of the band were revealed garnering an eruption of cheers that resonated through the room. Brittany’s magnetic stage presence and soulful vocals led the band through an eclectic mix of funky beats blended with roots music. Transitioning from whispering intimate verses of beautiful ballads to belting out powerful rock-infused anthems. Performing almost all of the newly released album What Now? as well as 8 songs from her first solo effort Jaime.

It was a wonderful evening of eclectic spirituality with Brittany sharing stories of where the raw emotion came from that inspired her writing over the last two albums. Conveying the hardships of a mixed race girl growing up in the southern US, the loss of her sister at a young age and the age old tale of longing for love. You could feel the love, support and sense of community mutually shared between the band and audience.

Brittany’s music has humbling narratives that prove flowers can bloom in the desert. Nurture your inner self and radiate your beauty with everyone that wants to see you shine!
