Khruangbin with John Carroll Kirby at History

The universe smiled upon Toronto this weekend. Psych-rock masters Khruangbin were in town to get the people everywhere grooving to their silky smooth sounds. Friday night was the first of three sold out shows in the city. They are joined by John Carroll Kirby and his jazz ensemble.

Right before the show, Leezy’s voice came over the PA system to let the crowd know that they were encouraged to meet the people around them and to understand that the evening was a community vibe. As the house lights faded, the dark room started to fill with a hazy mist of fog. The band sauntered out onto the dimly lit stage taking their places. Each member silhouetted in a window of the triple archway at the back of the stage. It was the perfect backdrop for the dreamy night ahead.

Khruangbin’s latest release, A La Sala, came out April 5th. The evening’s setlist showcased the entire album from start to finish during the first set. The sensational songs Pon Pón, Hold Me Up (Thank You) and A Love International were notable highlights. Marko and Leezy slowly prowling around the stage like peacocks in a mating ritual. DJ Johnson holding down the beat with clockwork precision.
The second set was a real treat for the fans. Some of the band’s most popular songs elevated the mood in the room. August 10, Lady and Man as well as Time (You & I) had the audience moving and undulating to the funky rhythms.

Happiness and joy radiated through the crowd. What a fabulous way to start the weekend!
