Deep Purple with YES at Budweiser Stage

On Sunday night Deep Purple delivered a masterclass in rock ‘n’ roll at the Budweiser Stage, proving once again why they are icons of the genre. The band’s legendary status was firmly upheld, bringing both classic hits along with songs from their recent release =1.

After a short video presentation the band started into a jam before Ian Gillan appeared. “Highway Star” pierced through the summer air, the audience erupted in cheers. It was a thrilling start to a set that would span decades of rock excellence. Gillan’s voice was still powerful and expressive, delivering each line with the intensity and finesse that fans have come to expect. Tracks like “Lazy” and “Smoke on the Water” showcased his ability to still hit those iconic high notes, much to the delight of the audience.

The musicianship of the band was nothing short of spectacular. Roger Glover and Ian Paice formed a duo familiar with solid rock beats and the bottom end. Simon McBride’s guitar solos were intense and intricate, blending technical skill with emotional depth. He came to the edge of the stage a few times, exciting and delighting the crowd. Don Airey’s keyboard work was also noteworthy, adding layers of complexity and richness to the band’s sound that paid homage to the band’s classic albums while pushing their music into new territories. Taking time out of his solo to toast a glass of wine and later inspiring the audience to rise as he played O Canada.

Throughout the night, the connection between the band and the audience was palpable. Fans of all ages seemed to be united by their love for Deep Purple, and the band’s enthusiasm for performing was evident. The visual effects and stage design, though straightforward, complemented the music perfectly, allowing the focus to remain firmly on the band’s performance.

As the night drew to a close the encore began with the chugging chords of “Hush” rumbling through the loudspeakers. It’s one of my favourite songs and it was wonderful to hear it live. The electrifying “Black Night” finished off the fiery performance leaving Smoke On The Water at Budweiser stage.

Yes also put on a fantastic performance. Delivering a concise setlist of fan favourites. I’ve Seen All Good People getting the audience moving. Yours Is No Disgrace proving Steve Howe is still a guitar wizard. The band returned after enthusiastic applause, raising the roof with the encore pairing of Roundabout and Starship Trooper.
