Song Premiere: “Hey Tomorrow” by Deerheart

Tom Ciorciari is originally from Greenlawn New York. He lived most of his life on Long Island with the exception of a short stint in NYC in 1981, and had a couple of years (’84-’87) in Boston while in a band called The Pets. Recently, Tom has played the Boulton Center as a member of NYRMA (New York Roots Music Association). He has participated in “The Elvis Show”, which had been an annual Elvis Presley tribute show from 1991-2013, Tom being one of the few performers to be included in every show. Currently, Tom has rounded up some musicians to join him on his new project forming the band Deerheart. They will soon be releasing a new album titled “Fer Elsie”.

“The new album deals with some difficult topics and themes: the dark, secret things that happen behind closed doors in the seemingly idyllic suburbs; the idea of morality not as some socially accepted set of rules, but as individual tenets, specific to a lifestyle, or, more to the point, to the convenience of the owner. The lyric ‘Good or bad, right or wrong, what’s the difference… It all depends on your point of view’, which comes midway through the album, pretty much sums it all up in those two lines.

Then there’s ‘Hey Tomorrow’, which brings in a touch of optimism; new love, and the hope of salvation despite all that’s gone before; despite the darkness. I wrote it right around the time I asked my wife to marry me, and I think that’s reflected in the lyric: ‘Those eyes of blue lighting up my brain’. Aurally, I kept it very dry and acoustic, I wanted it to feel intimate. There’s a pulsating piano underneath, and some cool percussive things happening, such as me playing my lap in the B section, along with some sweet harmonies and a bit of Beatle-esque bass in the coda. It changes the mood of the album and points toward redemption. There is hope. Love does exist, you’ve just got to hold out, keep your eyes open and not settle.”
