Fall Out Boy at Sound Academy – May 24, 2013

Written and Photographed by Katrina Wong Shue at MUCH MUSIC

After 3 years of silence and going on separate musical adventures, Fall Out Boy is finally back to ‘Save Rock And Roll’! The Chicago based quartet brought the Sound Academy to life on Friday May 24th, playing to a sold out show. They opened up the night with a song off of their commercially successful album Infinity On High. When the lights dimmed and the intro to “Thriller” started to play, the band’s silhouettes appeared on the white curtain, which got the crowd itching with anticipation. As soon as that curtain dropped, madness broke loose in the crowd as everyone began singing along and pushing each other left right and center in the attempts of getting a closer to the band. Their set list was perfect as they had a really good combination of songs from all 4 of their albums, which catered to both new and old fans.

Along with the perfect set list, bassist Pete Wentz also gave a little shout out to Mayor Rob Ford during the set saying “Remember kids, don’t smoke crack!”, referring to the mayor’s recent crack smoking allegations. Between Wentz and lead singer Patrick Stump, they were able to keep the energy amongst the fans going by constantly engaging them between songs, while guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley held down the fort, not missing a single beat.

As the night came to a close, Fall Out Boy ended their set playing ‘Save Rock And Roll’, ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ and ‘Saturday’, in which Wentz jumped up onto the barricade to sing while high fiving as many fans as he could.

It was amazing to see that even after going into hiding for a couple of years, it felt like Fall Out Boy had never really left. And even after their continued success, they are still the same fun loving and down to earth band we all fell in love with 10 years ago. Stump even went outside to meet the fans after the show, but then later tweeted that once he finally had the chance to go out he saw the last fan leave in a cab, as he didn’t realize security was telling fans that they were no longer at the venue.

Be sure to check out Fall Out Boy’s latest album ‘Save Rock And Roll’ which is in stores now, and catch them when they come back to Toronto on September 15th at Echo Beach!
