Internationally acclaimed Irish violinist, Gregory Harrington, presents his latest music video, “Oblivion”. The slow, sensual Argentinian tango was composed by Astor Piazzolla — who was best known for creating the “nuevo tango” — and arranged by Harrington himself.
The video opens with Harrington dressed in all black, slowly walking to take his place, while pianist Simon Mulligan plays the opening phrase. The camera slowly sweeps to the bassist, Leon Boykins, and then to the drummer, Matt Scarano, before gliding back to Harrington, who is in a deeply introspective state as his fingers slide effortlessly across the neck of his instrument. The other three musicians are equally immersed in their own worlds.
The video is shot artfully in black and white by cinematographer, Stanley Rojas, and directed and edited by Michael Robayo. The gradual, sweeping motion of the camera mimics the slow, deliberate motions of the dance while matching the melancholy and longing portrayed in the music, entrancing the viewer as well.
Harrington says, “The first time I performed my arrangement of ‘Oblivion’ was at Carnegie Hall in 2013. That event created the impetus for my journey to record my upcoming album, Without You. I tried to capture the beautiful South American flavors of sound in the piece, evoking the instruments of the bandoneon to the flute…and it is definitely one of my favorites on the album.”
Gregory Harrington’s new album, Without You, hits all digital streaming sites on June 7, 2019.
