Behind The Song: “Feelin’ It Again” – Maddisun

With songs that explore emotional journeys of love, loss, growth, redemption, and resilience, breakout Canadian singer-songwriter Maddisun brands herself as “Joni Mitchell on rock ‘n’ roll steroids” –seamlessly weaving together alt-rock, indie-folk, soulful R&B, and electro-pop influences that reflect her raw vocal talent, pure musicality, and unfiltered authenticity.

Born and raised in the wilderness of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Maddisun was raised in a supportive musical family and displayed early precocious artistic talents. With diverse musical influences like Sheryl Crow, Maggie Rogers,Phoebe Bridgers,and of course Joni Mitchell, Maddisun honed her skills in songwriting and studio production growing upbeforemoving to Europe after high school to spend 2 years in Dublin finding her place as a live performer.

Today we are excited to be teaming up with Maddisun to give our readers an exclusive behind the scenes look at her latest single “Feelin’ It Again”! The track is Maddisun’s first collaboration with producer Ian Docherty (July Talk). A genre-fluid mix of alt-rock and alt-pop, it examines the emotional trials and tribulations of an artist’s journey. Check it out below.

Hi! Maddisun here, musician/artist/influencer of sorts from Cranbrook BC. I grew up in the wilderness of the rocky mountains, and music was always around me. Taking inspiration from classic ‘70s rock n roll, and modern alternative music. I like to brand myself as “Joni Mitchell” on rock n roll steroids.

The Inspiration
I’m singing about the rollercoaster that is the artist life, and how you can get distracted so by approvals, but ultimately that I know and trust everything will be just fine in the end. Keep searching for those things that fill you with joy, keep diving deeper and showing up as your most authentic self every day, through all the ups and downs. Be grateful for your path and trust yourself.

“It’s gonna be fine, gonna be just alright this time.”

This song came to me as a jingle that I would sing when things get tough on the road. It became a very expansive song when i started to record it, and I knew it was going to be heavily influenced by alternative rock sounds.

The Creation
I wrote the song over a year ago actually, and I soon after made a demo and knew I needed to create something big with it. I travelled from Cranbrook BC to Toronto to record this and 2 other songs with the incredible Ian Docherty (of July Talk and Dwayne Gretzky) we were in the studio for a solid 4 days (10+ hour days) of straight creative magic!!! some amazing friends (Dylan Burrett on bass and Dani Nash on drums) also joined us in recording and collaborating. I had lots of friends visit me in the studio to hangout and listen to the songs, it felt like a true moment out of the early days of music. something that made me feel really “Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks… also it only enhanced that feeling due to the fact that Ian worked pretty exclusive with analogue gear. Everything we created is through instruments and amps, so plug ins or computer synths 🙂 which gives it a very real feeling. It’s raw + genuine. just like me.

The Audience
Definitely a song for the creatives/artists/ entrepreneurs and those who live very fast paced changing lives. I am speaking directly on that topic. However, with the final message in the song being “it’s gonna be fine gonna be just alright this time” it reminds us all that we’re gonna be okay if we keep staying true to ourselves and focusing on accepting growth and change. I call it “hope core”.
