The Script at Massey Hall

On Thursday night, Irish rock trio The Script brought their No Sound Without Silence Tour to Massey Hall. If you had the opportunity to see this group before, then you know what to expect: piano-laden songs with a polished, anthemic rock sound. Lead singer Danny O’Donoghue said the North American leg of the tour will feature a more scaled-down version of the show which promises to be “really special.”

They started with an homage to their Irish roots, “Paint the Town Green” followed by a string of fan favorites.  For the next two hours, the band performed tracks from their latest album, No Sound Without Silence and old hits like “Breakeven”, “For The First Time” and “The Man That Can’t Be Moved”.  Their performance of “Superheroes” was the up-lifting part of the show. Their message of “seizing the day” and becoming your own hero made you feel supreme.  And the inspiring, percussive- heavy chorus mixed with the trio’s vocal harmonies displayed The Script’s exceptional talent.

As you look around the venue, it’s obvious the group has a strong following in our city.  With the band’s Celtic soul-energy, it’s no surprise The Script earned international success.  And the trio was pleased to see their music has touched so many.  “Music is there for everyone,” said O’Donoghue. “It’s great to see like-minded people under one roof”.

The highlight of the gig was when O’ Donoghue called a fan’s ex-girlfriend and performed “Nothing”: an antic which has become popular at their shows. At the end, he asked the crowd to say “goodbye asshole” to the confused girl on the other line. The show finished with “Hall of Fame” with The Script staying on stage to take in the lengthy ovation and thanking the crowd for an awesome night.
