Book Review: Fired Up

by Mia Herrera

Fired Up, the first novel in Krentz’s new Dreamlight Trilogy, features Chloe Harper and Jack Winters – two people with psychic abilities. Centuries ago, Jack’s ancestor, Nicholas Winters, altered his genes to possess two psychic talents – one talent more than people are naturally born to possess. The genetic alteration was passed along the Winters’s male line, occasionally emerging to grant Nicholas’s descendants with a second talent soon after their 36th birthdays. Unfortunately, the second talent comes with a curse: unless stabilized with the help of the alchemically created Burning Lamp, having two talents at once causes insanity and turns the unfortunate Winters male into a psychic monster.

Soon after Jack turns 36, he begins having severe hallucinations and blackouts. One night he wakes up in an alley on the scene of a crime, acutely aware that he’s murdered the man he finds before him. In order to save himself from insanity, Jack must recover the lost Burning Lamp. Jack contacts Chloe Harper, an extremely talented woman who can read the dreamlight contained in the lamp. Chloe agrees to help locate and work the crucial artifact, but before they can do so, they must elude Jones & Jones and Nightshade – two undercover psychic societies with their own agendas. Add to the mix Jack and Chloe’s increasing and often distracting intimacy, and you’ve got one fast-paced, sexually charged thriller.

Fired Up continually mixes large doses of mystery, excitement, and sexual tension, creating a fast-paced thriller with lots of action. The Winters Legend offers a great source of material, though it is sometimes lost in lingering details of Jack and Chloe’s romance. Readers who enjoy genre books of mystery, thrill, and romance should look forward to what the rest of this series may offer. Hopefully more may be done with the Winters Legend in future books.
