After a bit of a hiatus, figuring out things, going on vacation and a couple of trips Andrew Tomayer is back with another edition of his Spotlight band of the week.
Back in June 2009, Sean and myself had Live in Limbo involved with a coverage of North by Northeast festival in Toronto (if you have not read those articles check them out, they are UBER awesome). There were so many bands to see and hear that I did not manage to get a chance to check out this band from Chicago, Illinois called My My My. Within my press package I received a copy of their single Loudest Summer from their latest album Little Cat Plays the Alpha Rave which was recorded at the Engine Studios, and later Mastered at the Gravity Studios by Doug McBride… you know… of the McBride clan. Anyways, the song was written by lead vocalist/guitarist Russell Baylin and produced by himself with Neil Strauch as well as involving the entire band (Sarah Snow, John Roper, Bill Skafish, Johnny Szymanski, and Russell too) and it sounds great.As mentioned by the Chicago Sun-Times, they do sound similar to The New Pornographers, but they combine that heir of viruosity with their own sense of style and sound as well. Using synthesizers, guitars, and chanting lyrics they are slowly but surely bringing the attention of people all around this area of the world. Not many have heard this band perform but if you give their songs a chance, they will surely be attached to your heart as they are to mine. From their myspace page, www.myspace.com/iluvmymymy, the band sounds like “an old boyfriend screaming on your porch about love, sex and near death before passing out in the back seat of your car” and I am not making that up and fully concur with that statement about them.
They have a delicious fervor to their eclectic sounds that rips through your ears and makes the memory of the noise forever engrained into your mind with their pop synth melodies and yelling such unforgettable choruses like “I wait for the rain to run the gun and then I hide the feeling like a RICH BOY’S SON! It was the LOUDEST SUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAHAHHAHHH” (you just have to listen to the song for it to take you away from this reality to place you in the position of the musicians in order to fully understand how that chorus and the rest of the song hits you to the ground with such intensity and talent). The various other tunes which I later listened to on their myspace page, including Middle Age Hardware, So You Like Italdisco, and SeeThru, all contribute a further understanding of where the band is coming from with their various instruments and mostly synth/guitar-based melodies. Overall, this band deserves much more coverage than there is right at this moment and I hope you take the chance to check out the poetic nature and aggressively poppy melodies of the band My My My, and you will see that they will put a spell on you with their Tina Turner and The Band inspired tunes.
At this point in time they have three shows lined up for September and they are:
September 5, 2009 at Arlene’s Grocery in New York, New York
September 18, 2009 at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago, Illinois
And September 25, 2009 at the Mid Point Music Festival/Cadillac Ranch in Cincinnati, Ohio
