UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin In-Depth Review

In what I can only describe as the most intense, excited and greatest heavyweight bout I have ever seen, UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar defeated the Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin to become the Undisputed Champion.

This true clash of the MMA-gods took place last night July 3, 2010 at UFC 116 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand and it was by far the most anticipated matches ever for many reasons.

Many MMA fans from around the world still feel that Lesnar may not be as deserving to be the champion as he’s only had 5 fights prior to this match (4-1). His wins include victories over an aging Randy Couture (UFC 91) and a revenge match against Frank Mir (UFC 100) whom actually made Lesnar tap out for his only lose prior (UFC 81: Breaking Point). Some believe, leading up to UFC 116, that if it wasn’t for Lesnar previous fame from the WWE and NFL, he wouldn’t have climbed the UFC rankings as fast as he did to take advantage of a Couture.

Shane Carwin on the other hand is a straight-up bad ass and his stats prove it. Carwin had an undefeated streak before debuting at UFC 84, and managed to remain undefeated until he claimed the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship by KO’ing Frank Mir (UFC 111). What was truly astonishing was that Carwin had never gone past the first round of any of his MMA fights ever. He had managed to knock out or submit all of his opponents within round one.

Now this is where all different variable things occur in a way that I believe helps predict the outcome of Lesnar vs. Carwin at UFC 116.

Carwin was confirmed to face Lesnar for the championship at UFC 106 on November 21, 2009, however this match was postponed due to a chronic intestinal disorder, Diverticulitis, and surgery. Therefore, Carwin and Mir fought for the Interim Championship in which Carwin was victorious.

Lesnar’s medical doctors stated that his intestinal problems have been with him probably for almost an entire year meaning that he fought and won the Championship while in that condition. This is shocking because his physicians believed that Lesnar was fighting at only 60-80% throughout that time. And now that he was fully healed, the extra 20% actually made a difference.

Last night was the accumulation of all the events leading up to this monster of a match.

The first round started off as the typical Carwin fight and as predicted, Carwin must have and did unleash hell’s fury and bloodied Lesnar and almost went for the kill. The UFC universe was shocked because no one has seen Lesnar take such as beating before. It looked like it was actually over while Carwin kept striking Lesnar’s face over and over again with brutal ground pounds. But to everyone’s amazement, the reigning heavyweight Champion was not done and Lesnar somehow survived Round 1.

The next round is when everything falls into favor of the Champion. Lesnar managed to take Carwin to a place he’s never been to before, Round 2. Everyone could see it on his face, Carwin was exhausted after over working himself, but in my opinion he had to and that was and is the only way one could defeat Lesnar. Because Lesnar is a gigantic grizzly bear whom can endure anything and the longer the match goes, the less of a chance his opponent has to win. So in my opinion, Carwin did the right thing and almost, just almost had it. Now in a place he’s never been before and in a cage with a Brock Lesnar who has an extra 20% of raw energy, endurance and brute force left in him, it was all over. Lesnar started the second round with a big smile on his face and managed to bring Carwin to the mat with a take-down and exhaust whatever energy Carwin had left and then finally put a nail in the coffin by making Carwin submit with an Arm Triangle Choke. Seriously, who saw that coming? Lesnar is really learning new techniques and has definitely evolved.

The Last Emperor, Fedor Emelianenko (32-2) famously said “The man who doesn’t fall, doesn’t stand up.” Lesnar fell hard in the first round but had enough juice to stand back up and become dominant. I think that the numbers in this match show how much Lesnar could endure. Carwin delivered 58 vicious strikes compared to Lesnar’s 25.

After UFC 116 and seeing what he managed to survive and destroy, I think that there is no longer any doubt what so ever that Brock Lesnar is the Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion and that he truly worked hard and deserves it.

Lesnar concluded UFC 116 saying “I stand before you as a humble champion and still the toughest S.O.B around baby.”
