Sidney York at The Rivoli

The girls of Sidney York, Brandi Sidoryk and Krista Wodelet seemed to have some issues with setting up their gear as they started their show a few minutes late. When they were all ready a man from Co. Pilot Artist Management introduced a music video they wanted to show us first before the set started. “Weird For You” was a Moonrise Kingdom inspired short telling the story of an odd girl trying to make friends at camp. When the video ended the girls launched into their set, starting with the very song we just saw. They asked us to sing along since we must all know it by now. It features a very cute call and response chorus that only two good friends could make. Their Hole meets Metric vibe works for them as they rock out with sometimes-aggressive vocals mixed with sugary synth pop.

They played a country fried dance song “Dick and Jane” that had the main beat emanating from a ukulele played by Sidoryk. By the end of the song Wodelet broke out a bassoon for an instrument that is never seen in pop music. If Colin Stetson taught us anything, then unusual instruments can make for some great music. The bassoon added a great weirdness to enhance their 80’s version of futuristic pop music. Towards the end, the two girls shared the same keyboard while singing side by side, on an ode to their cell phones. It was a tender moment offset by the Nine Inch Nails like music.
