Intention and a New Icon

Six years ago in May I started Live in Limbo. It was nothing more than just a little blog I did myself. This sprung out of the new found passion I had for attending concerts and taking photos during high school. I was the director of photography for the yearbook committee, documented a lot of bands my friends were part of, and then began shooting for other publications in Toronto.

After a few years of this adventure, I had the privilege of becoming friends with wickedly talented and smart people. What started out as a solo hobby quickly became a growing collective that brings the best of Toronto’s music, film, and pop-culture to the world

I’d like to personally thank my amazing team at LiL. My dear friends. None of this would be possible without your continued passion and loyalty. At LiL, we strive to create the best content possible, and we nail it every time. Even more important than the content and numbers, is the culture and team we have been able to foster.

Over time, I have found that one of the most important criteria that determines a certain  level of success from a website owner’s perspective, is to ask your self one question: “Can this operate without me?”.  I am fortunate to know that LiL can.

Thank you to the editors of LiL, Randall Vasquez, Sarah Rix, Katrina Wong Shue, Andreas Babiolakis, and Dakota Arsenault for everything you do. And keystone contributors like Stephen McGill, Neil Van, Lee-Ann Richer, Igor Vidyashev, just to name a few who elevated LiL to new unprecedented levels. Together we have built LiL to a high reputation.

I also want to thank the artists, labels, promoters, publicists, and venues for your continued strong support and encouragement. Without you, we’d have nothing to create the best content about.

I chose this moment in time to write this note because we’re just a few weeks from NXNE. It was the first major festival that we attended back in 2009 and they represent many of the things LiL does.

With all this said, what is the future of Live in Limbo? Well, you’ll find out the significant as soon as they come to life. But we’re constantly internally discussing new and exciting things to produce. One of the best things we’ve done was get into podcasting. Capsule is our flagship were we interview some of the most talented musicians in the world and next is Contra Zoom where we discuss films in-depth. This medium is an amazing way to intimately reach our audience by new conventions.

But today, I am so proud and so thrilled to share something special with you…

Design defines so much of our experience. Our website layout debuted two years ago and is consistently being refined behind the scenes for incredible speed and reliably. I have received significant amount of positive feed back for it’s simplicity and focus to put content at the forefront. The item that hasn’t seen real change since the inception is the LiL logo.

I am pleased to unveil today is our new icon. This is a token to show that we’re in this for the long run. This gem was designed by our friend Matt McCracken of Doublenaut in Toronto. I’ve been a huge fan of his work for years and was lucky that he was able to squeeze our project into his busy schedule. I tasked him with the difficult duty of creating one that communicates delight, surprise, love, and connection. There was much collaboration between Matt, the team at LiL, and myself since January.

This symbol reinvigorates our intention. It’s simple and beautifully handcrafted. These symbols represent sound waves emerging from ‘limbo’ where the 4-pointed star exists. It also subtly says “LiL” without putting it in plain text. Colour psychology was carefully thought of as well. Teal represents clarity, rejuvenation, and growth. Red embodies passion, intimacy, and excitement. Black sends a sense of prestige and power. I hope you love it as much as I do. This design defines an important new direction, and in many ways a beginning for Live in Limbo.

Again, thank you for your continued support,

Sean
